Better track nutrition funding

Considerable efforts were devoted to building a stronger system for tracking nutrition funding by OECD DAC donors (Action Against Hunger, 2012, 2014). Despite the progress achieved, there was a limited understanding of what funds are available for nutrition, where they are allocated and whether they are properly channeled to reach the most vulnerable population.

With the aim of improving accountability and transparency on nutrition, Action Against Hunger has submitted several nutrition proposals to the OECD (March 2016, July 2016, March 2017).  Starting from July 2017 until June 2018, major nutrition donors from the Sun Donor Network owned the process and submitted three proposals in collaboration with Action Against Hunger.

Those proposals aimed at addressing the finance gap data, according to donors’ preferences. DAC members have decided on the best option to track nutrition investments: (1) amending the basic nutrition code and (2) introducing a new marker for nutrition. This is an important step towards a world free from all forms of malnutrition.

Aid for nutrition – Better tracking

A technical proposal to amend CRS purpose codes in the nutrition sector and establish a new marker for nutrition will be submitted to DAC members at the next WP STAT (Working Party on Development Finance Statistics) meeting from Feb 28 to March 2. This note summarizes the proposed changes.

The first report, Aid for Nutrition: Can investments to scale up nutrition actions be accurately tracked, was published in May 2012 and assesses the scale of investments made by major national and private donors to direct nutrition interventions in the 2005 to 2009 period.

For some years now, Action Against Hunger provides a comprehensive assessment of french ODA dedicated to nutrition. In 2016 and 2017, ACF co-published the analysis with the French MoFA. We also drafted a common methodology based on the SUN methodology, and partnered to review all the relevant projects. Those reports are in French.
