Our intervention in Nigeria
Nutritional insecurity worsened in Nigeriain in 2023, leaving 4.9 million children undernourished in the northern region of the country and more than 3 million internally displaced within and outside of formal camps due to insecurity caused by non-state armed groups and banditry.
In total, there is an estimated number of 8.3 Million people in need and 2.4 Million in acute need in North East Nigeria.
Nutrition and health interventions continued in 2023, through screening, treatment, and health education activities for severely malnourished children, and ensuring quality health, mental health, and psychosocial support services in health facilities in Borno, Yobe states. Action Against Hunger’s continued its programme activities to address the very poor nutritional situation in the northwestern region of Sokoto State in the year 2023.
Additionally, in Northeast Nigeria and some parts of North West, Action Against Hunger provided food aid to internally displaced people and their host communities and implemented livelihood promotion and resilience-building activities. In Jigawa, Action Against Hunger played a crucial role in ensuring food security for the most vulnerable by helping to ensure that social protection laws were passed in 2022 and providing technical support to the government of the State.
Action Against Hunger trained the Social Protection Officers from the Governmentof Nigeria on monitoring and evaluation principles, supported the organisation of workshops on social protection and its financing strategy, and supported civil society organisations to raise awareness onsocial protection.
Action Against Hunger also rehabilitated and constructed new water and sanitation infrastructures across our intervention States, and promoted effective hygiene practices, and continued its groundwater advocacy and monitoring project in Borno and Yobe States. Within the framework of the rapid response mechanism for population displacement Action Against Hunger provided WASH services and cash transfers to populations displaced by violence and floods in all its areas of intervention.
