Press release
Dr Pierre Micheletti was elected President of Action contre la Faim by the organisation’s Administration Board on Wednesday, June 26, 2019. This appointment follows the General Assembly on June 15 which allowed part of the Administration Board to be renewed.
Pierre Micheletti succeeds Mr. Thomas Ribémont, who has been appointed Honorary President of the NGO. Vice-President of Action contre la Faim since 2015, Pierre Micheletti has been elected as President of the international NGO that unites more than 4,500 employees around the world at an important time in its history. After years of decline, the number of people suffering from hunger in the world is on the rise again. This number has now reached 821 million people.
“Action contre la Faim is 40 years old this year and now, more than ever before, must stand as a civic organisation serving a cause; an organisation that works in the interest of the people and together with the people in whom it has chosen to invest, firm in its commitment to developing partnerships with civil societies in the countries where it operates”, declares Pierre Micheletti.
Pierre Micheletti’s commitment to international solidarity is not new. A doctor, with a degree in Advanced Studies in Public Health, his first experience abroad was back in 1985. In 1987, he joined Médecins du Monde as head of mission in Guatemala. He became Programs Director in 1996, and was elected president in 2006 until 2009. In 2014, he joined the board of Action contre la Faim, of which he became vice-president in 2015.
In parallel, Pierre Micheletti has been contributing for several years to the reflections on the evolution of humanitarian aid and the world of international solidarity. Since 2009, he has been teaching at the Grenoble Institute of Political Studies where he is a co-director of the master’s degree “Policies and Practices of International Organizations”, as well as at the Grenoble Faculty of Medicine where he created and directs the diploma “health-solidarity-vulnerability”. He has published several books including Humanitaire, s’adapter ou renoncer in 2008 (Marabout).
“An NGO like Action contre la Faim and its international network must act as a laboratory in which alternative forms of international solidarity are reflected and new forms of cooperation and interventions on the ground are invented to respond to complex issues” explains Pierre Micheletti.
