Action Against Hunger condemns violence against aid workers in Gaza

On Sunday 13 October 2024, just 300 metres from the Action Against Hunger office in Deir al-Balah, an Israeli airstrike targeted Al Aqsa Hospital, setting tents on fire, also affecting the people in there. This is the fourth airstrike on Al Aqsa Hospital in the last ten days.

Days earlier, on Thursday 10 October 2024, two health workers were killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting the Rafidah school, which has been converted into a shelter for displaced persons, in Deir al-Balah. Six others at the Ard El Insan Child Nutrition Centre were seriously injured. Earlier that morning, Action Against Hunger staff had been distributing water at the school – once at 8am and again at 10am. -. Just an hour later, the airstrike struck, killing more than 28 people and injuring 50 others, including colleagues working on nutrition activities. Israeli forces were informed of these humanitarian activities at the Rafidah school.

The crisis in Gaza is getting worse by the day. The violence we are witnessing after a year of conflict is impacting civilians, humanitarian workers, hospitals, schools and shelters. All parties must do everything in their power to ensure compliance with international humanitarian law,” said Action Against Hunger’s Middle East operations manager Natalia Anguera.

Action Against Hunger condemns the continued targeting of civilians, humanitarian and health workers, as well as essential civilian infrastructure, and strongly recalls the need for an immediate and sustained ceasefire.

Action Against Hunger has been working in the Occupied Palestinian Territory since 2002, and in the Gaza Strip since 2005. Since October 2023, our staff have responded to the current crisis by providing more than 1.1 million people with food, water, sanitation, hygiene and nutrition interventions.
