Lebanon ceasefire extension: protect civilians now

Action Against Hunger is highly concerned by the recent escalation of violence in Lebanon following the expiration of the ceasefire on January 26. The tragic loss of 22 lives, including women, with 124 others injured, including 12 women, 9 children, underscores the urgent need for civilian protection and respect for international humanitarian law.

The announcement of the ceasefire extension to February 18, 2025, offers a critical window for diplomatic efforts to secure peace and ensure humanitarian access to affected communities. Action Against Hunger is assessing urgent needs on the ground as many displaced people have left collective shelters. With families beginning to return to heavily affected areas, access to essential services remains limited due to widespread destruction. Urgent needs include shelter, water, hygiene, food, and medical care. Our operations remain focused on supporting families in shelters, those unable to access their homes, and those returning under difficult conditions.

Action Against Hunger is actively working across Beirut, Mount Lebanon, Bekka, Baalbek-Hermel, Nabatiyeh, and South governorates. Since October 2023, our interventions have supported almost 90,000 individuals addressing their food, water, hygiene, nutrition, health and shelter needs. As the humanitarian crisis continues, we remain committed to scaling up our efforts to meet these escalating demands. We urge all parties to prioritize the safety of civilians, facilitate unhindered humanitarian assistance, and ensure adherence to the ceasefire agreement.

We stand committed with Lebanon’s recovery and reconstruction efforts, emphasizing the importance of international engagement in achieving lasting peace and stability. Continued collaboration and adherence to ceasefire agreements are essential to mitigating further suffering and advancing humanitarian objectives.
