While the effects of climate change are being felt around the world, some populations are already suffering the most extreme consequences. Bangladesh, one of the most vulnerable countries, faces recurrent flooding, salinization of its agricultural land, and forced displacement of populations. Yet, far from giving up, local communities are showing remarkable resilience.

Through a report produced in Bangladesh, on the coast of the Bay of Bengal, by Action Against Hunger, we discover the faces, voices, and struggles of Rekha, Suma, Musamudrazin, and all those who live on the front lines of the climate crisis. This video highlights not only the challenges, but also the local responses, solidarity, and innovations brought about by the populations themselves.

The screening will be followed by a debate moderated by Coralie Schaub, deputy head of the environment department at Libération, with the participation of experts from Action Against Hunger’s WASH (water, sanitation, hygiene) and climate sectors. Using Bangladesh as an example, we will open up to the rest of the world and address the key issues of the coming years, such as climate justice, training populations in climate adaptation, transforming food systems, the role of international governance, and solutions. This exchange will also be an opportunity to address the issues of the upcoming COP30 and the major topics of this major international event.

INTRODUCTION OF SPEAKERS

Hosted by Coralie Schaub, deputy head of the environment unit at Libération.

Marie Cosquer is an advocacy analyst on food systems and climate at Action Against Hunger. She is one of the coordinators for agriculture within the Climate Action Network International and a facilitator for social movements working on the right to food, within the framework of the Civil Society and Indigenous Peoples Mechanism.

Julien Eyrard is the technical advisor for Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene within Action Against Hunger’s Asia Pool. An anthropologist by training, he worked for many years with ethnic minorities in Southeast Asia on issues related to water resource sharing before embarking on a career in humanitarian work, first in the field and then at the association’s headquarters. He also teaches the geopolitics of development and hydro-diplomacy at Paris Nord Sorbonne University.

Marie-Sara Bouloumou is responsible for advocacy on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) at Secours Islamique France, a French emergency and development NGO operating in some 15 countries around the world. A lawyer specializing in environmental law (Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne), she has worked on water-related issues from Chile to Morocco and France. At SIF, she is particularly involved in issues of global water governance, a human rights-based approach (HRBA), the achievement of SDG 6, and universal access to the human rights to water and sanitation, particularly for the most vulnerable populations (e.g., in rural areas), as well as the link between water and food security, particularly in the context of the climate crisis. As a member of several collectives such as the French Water Partnership and the Water Coalition, she participates in discussions on the use of water as a weapon and the recognition of water as a common good.
