Our intervention in Central African Republic
Despite an overall reduction in armed conflicts in 2023, the security situation in certain regions of the Central African Republic (CAR) remains highly unstable.
Particularly in the west of the country, where most of Action contre la Faim’s work in CAR is concentrated, the increase in the number of incidents involving anti-personnel mines is a cause for concern.
In 2023, 3.4 million Central Africans (56%) required humanitarian assistance. Needs are multi-sectoral and remain colossal. With regard to WaSH, Health and Food Security, three of Action contre la Faim’s areas of expertise, nearly 3 million people in each of these sectors are in need.
In CAR, in 2023, Action contre la Faim delivered emergency support to displaced, repatriated and/or crisis-affected populations, notably by improving access to healthcare and nutrition for children and pregnant and breastfeeding women in the prefectures of Basse-Kotto, Nana-Mambéré, Sangha-Mbaéré, Ouham and Ouham-Pendé. In Bangui and Alindao, malnourished children and their caregivers also received psychological support.
As part of its rapid response mechanism for population movements, Action contre la Faim assisted in the form of basic household kits, water, sanitation and hygiene, food aid and mental health support to affected households in Ouham, Ouham-Pendé, Nana-Mambéré and Mambéré-Kadéï.
Interventions were also carried out in Basse-Kotto, Ouham and Ouham-Pendé to improve access to water and sanitation facilities, and to promote good hygiene practices among the population. Sanitation facilities in health centers have also been improved.
Action contre la Faim also led interventions to improve the food security and mental health of populations living in Basse-Kotto and throughout the west of the country.
In addition, Action contre la Faim has implemented longer-term projects, continuing its collaboration with the Centre hospitalier universitaire pédiatrique de Bangui (CHUPB) and the University of Bangui to train doctors and health workers in the treatment of undernutrition. Finally, in Bossangoa, Action contre la Faim has supported the Centre de formation agricole et rurale and the Coopérative des apiculteurs de l’Ouham to improve the livelihoods of the population.
