Investing in the early years to build human capital is one of the smartest investments a country can make to break the cycle of poverty, address inequality, and boost productivity later in life.
It requires investing in a range of interventions – including nutrition interventions – and programs that target development early in a person’s life. However, today millions of young children suffer from undernutrition and are not reaching their full potential because of a lack of investments in early childhood development.
Parliamentarians can play a key role in championing the need to invest in the early years due to their legislative, representative, and oversight functions. ACTION and Action Against Hunger developed a briefing book, ”INVESTING IN THE EARLY YEARS TO BUILD HUMAN CAPITAL: Practical Solutions and Tools for Parliamentarians” to guide Parliamentarians as they build political will and push for increased investments in the critical early years of a child’s life. The book provides a clear overview of the investments that are needed, the existing opportunities for financing, and the role that parliamentarians can play.
