Action contre la Faim statement on Hodeida situation
Action Contre La Faim, along with other INGOs, is extremely concerned by the latest advances of pro-government forces in and around Hodeida; and the consequent cutting of routes as a result to the North and East of the country. Already, hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced in Hodeida governorate and this latest attack will likely result in a further wave of displacement as people flee fearing the conflict.
Equally, the likely closure of the port of Hodeida as a result of this new phase of the conflict will have a devastating effect upon the rest of the country – over 60% of the country’s imports come through the port in a country which produces less 20% of the food it needs to feed itself. The result is that the some 17.8 Million already in acute need of humanitarian assistance in Yemen will be further weakened; and joined by hundreds of thousands of others.
Finally, Action contre la Faim strongly condemns all attacks in Yemen that result in civilian casualties. Action Contre la Faim reminds all parties of their responsibilities with regard to respecting International Humanitarian Law Action Contre la Faim urges all parties to urgently put in place a cease fire and stop the fighting in and around Hodeida and restart the dialogue put in place with the UNSE Martin Griffiths.
Action Contre la Faim has been providing humanitarian assistance since the start of the conflict across all of Yemen to those affected by this most devastating of conflicts.
