Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh
India contributes to the maximum number of wasted children in the world. Every year 1 million children under the age of 5 die due to malnutrition related causes in India. These deaths are completely preventable if early action is taken to educate, screen, detect, refer, treat and follow up children found to be either severely or moderately malnourished.
In the state of Madhya Pradesh, 40% of children under 5 are stunted and 33% wasted. The rise in these nutritional indicators in the state is worrisome and it is essential that strategies for addressing this are adopted on a war footing. ACF-India has been working in Burhanpur district in Madhya Pradesh since 2012 to address the issue of Global Acute Malnutrition.
In the state of Rajasthan, 24% of children under 5 are stunted and 20% are wasted. Children belonging to “Schedule Tribes” in Rajasthan have the highest prevalence of Severe Acute Malnutrition, closely followed by children from “Schedule Castes” and other “Backward Classes”. Infant mortality rates are similar in urban and rural Rajasthan with an average of 57 deaths per 1,000 live births that is much higher than the national average, and classifies Rajasthan in the worst demographic data of the country. ACF India has been working in Baran district in Rajasthan since 2011.
