Peru is a middle-income county with a favorable economic and political situation, but also great inequalities of development within its population, between indigenous and non-indigenous, and urban and rural population. The country managed to reduce its rate of child malnutrition, but this rate remains important in rural areas.
ACF is working in Peru since 2007 with water and sanitation, food security, health and nutrition programs. Through these actions, the organization supports vulnerable populations and helps to reduce the inequalities existing in the country.

HUMANITARIAN CONTEXT
Peru is a middle-income county with a favorable economic and political situation since the middle of the last decade. This situation offers new opportunities of development for the country.
However, the concentration of wealth and the great inequalities between indigenous and non-indigenous, and urban and rural population, remains the main problem of the country.
It is estimated that 36% of Peruvians are living below the national poverty line, and almost 14% of people are suffering from poverty. This percentage exceeds 40% if we consider the populations of mountain areas.
Despite these indicators, Peru has managed to reduce its rate of child malnutrition between 2005 and 2009 (18.9%): almost 136,000 malnourished children under five were cured. However, chronic child malnutrition remains high in rural areas, reaching 32.8% of the children.
These progress were not reflected in the fight against anemia, since Peru has a rate of children suffering from anemia of 50.5%, that couldn’t significantly been improved this last years (60.9% 10 years ago).
