Places of interventions
Action against Hunger’s intervention in KRI started as a response to sudden massive in ux of people eeing Syria in August 2013. Initial intervention focused on WASH intervention in Erbil and Dohuk Governorates. The organization was at the forefront of the response to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) crisis in 2014 when IS took control of part of Iraq. Consequently, ACF scaled up its humanitarian response in term of geographical coverage, caseload and activities.
Action against Hunger is one of the rare organization whose of ce in Dohuk remained opened while the frontline was at its closest during summer 2014. It gave the organization the opportunity to be an early responder when hundreds of thousands IDPs took refuge within the KRI. The intervention covered camp and non-camp areas through food assistance, water, sanitation and hygiene and also protection and psychological and psychosocial support for population deeply affected by the war and ISIS atrocities.
Interventions also targeted sensitive areas close to frontline in Ninewa and part of Diyala. By developing a strong acceptance and networking strategy through implementation of projects and advocacy for access, ACF progressively entered hard to reach areas to meet the needs of vulnerable populations. With the objective to both respond to existing needs as well as prepare for new in ux of IDPs, ACF has become one of the rare active international actors in the targeted area. In 2016, Action against Hunger began to extend WASH activities in Akre district in Ninewa Governorate and Diyala (Jalawla).
The organization is also diversifying its activities through livelihoods projects such as developing greenhouse production of vegetables for Syrian refugees, cash distributions projects and new MHCP interventions in Diyala and Ninewah following the latest displacements. To strengthen understanding of this evolving crisis and to ensure effectiveness in the eld ACF is an active member of Clusters and Working Groups and has developed a robust coordination and relation with local and governmental authorities in the areas of intervention across KRI. As ACF is extending its intervention in Disputed Internal Boundaries, registration at central level of Iraqi government is in process and will enhance access to considered areas.
